Arvind sundar

b. 1993

Based in Coimbatore, India, Sundar’s practice engages deeply with geometry, grids, and mathematical systems. Through paintings, drawings, and sculptural objects, he explores the interplay between the physical and the spiritual, using mathematical frameworks as a pathway to reflect on repetition, deconstruction, and seriality – often invoking sacred geometry as a meditative language. Sundar received his MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Cincinnati’s School of Art in 2018, where he was honored as the Best Graduating Student of the Year. Prior to this, he completed a year of advanced coursework at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 2016 as a Presidential Scholar. In 2017, he was awarded the prestigious Wolstein Travel Fellowship, which enabled him to travel across Italy to study Renaissance painting and sculpture – an experience that continues to inform his approach to form, structure, and symmetry. He has participated in over fifty exhibitions across India, the United States, Europe, and South Korea. Notable exhibitions include Contemporary Art Centre (CAC), Cincinnati (2018); Homage to Hassan Sharif at Art Dubai (2017); Locus Pocus with Peter Shear at 840 Gallery, Cincinnati (2018); Drawing Index at Cholamandal Artists’ Village, Chennai (2019); and Making Spaces, a mural project in the Netherlands led by Dutch artist Lydia Wierenga (2020). He was part of the Indo-Korea exchange show in Jeju Island and exhibited at the Busan Art Fair (BEXCO) in 2023. Most recently, Sundar presented a solo exhibition titled Cosmos at Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art, Mumbai (2024), following his residency at Hampi Art Labs, powered by the JSW Foundation. He also participated in the India Art Fair (2024 and 2025) along with Art Mumbai (2024). In addition to his studio practice, he was awarded the BICAR Writing Fellowship in 2023, underscoring his commitment to both critical thought and artistic inquiry.
